      How To Weigh Your Clothes

Three different ways you can weigh your clothes

Before we can make you an offer for your clothes you’ll need to weigh them.  You’ll also need to tell us the total weight of your parcel before we can arrange a courier to collect them.

We have described three ways you can weigh your clothes below.  Please use the most accurate method you are able to.

Weigh your clothes with kitchen scales

If you have kitchen scales, these will be the most accurate.

Divide the clothes you’re selling into small piles, set the scales to zero and then measure the weight of each pile in kilograms.

Take care that the clothes don’t touch the surface the scales are sitting on or you might get an inaccurate reading.

Write down the weight of each pile and then add up all of the weights to give you a total weight.

Weigh your clothes with bathroom scales

If you don’t have kitchen scales, bathroom scales are the next best option.

First, stand on the scales yourself and note down your weight in kilograms.

Then, put the clothes into a large plastic bag or dustbin sack and pick it up.  Stand back on the scales and note down the weight shown.

Now deduct your own weight from that figure.  This will give you the weight of your clothes.

If you don't have kitchen or bathroom scales

Please use kitchen or bathroom scales if you possibly can.  If you can’t, then the method below will give you an approximate weight for your items.

Please be aware that any inaccuracies in the weight you declare for your clothes may affect the price we pay you. We will weigh all the clothes you send us after they arrive  and, if you use this method to weigh your clothes, the actual weight of clothes is likely to differ slightly.

What you will need for this method

This method of weighing your clothes is intended to be possible with very basic equipment found in most homes.

      You will need:

A strong coat hanger. The type with small hooks on the top is best.

A 1kg bag of sugar. If you don't have sugar, use any other full bag of food ingredients with a declared weight. Do not use tins or any item with heavy packaging.

Two large plastic bags of the same size and weight.

An doorway with a securely fixed architrave above it.

      How to weigh your clothing

Please take care when using this method to avoid heavy items falling onto people and objects below.

Step 1: Put the hanger on the architrave

Put the hanger in the centre of the architrave above the doorway.

Step 2: Put the bag of sugar in one carrier bag and hang it on the coat hanger

Put the sugar (or other food ingredients bag) into one of the carrier bags and carefully hang it onto the hook on one end of the coat hanger.

Step 3: Put the other carrier bag on the other end of the hanger

Carefully hang one of the handles of the other carrier bag on the other hook.  Leave it open so that you can put your clothes in it.

Step 4: Add your clothes until the two bags are balanced

Put your clothes into the second bag.  Carefully add them one at a time until the weight of the clothes is the same as the weight of the sugar / food ingredients bag.

Step 5: Note down the number of times you have to fill the bag

Write down how many times you fill the second bag with your clothes.  If the sugar / food ingredients you are using weighs 1kg, then each full bag of clothes also weighs 1kg.

If you are using a food ingredients bag with another weight, then make sure you record the weight of your clothes correctly.

Once you have weighed all your clothes, just multiply the number of bags of clothes by the weight of your food ingredients.

This will give you an approximate weight for your clothes from which we can calculate an offer price.

      What You Need

What you need so that we can agree to buy your clothes

Before we can agree to buy your clothes, we’ll need some information from you.
Here’s what you’ll need in order to send this information to us.

      A mobile phone or camera

If we’re interested in the clothes you’re selling, we’ll ask you to take some photographs of them in groups.  You can do this by laying them out on the floor and taking photos with your mobile phone.

      Bathroom or kitchen scales

We’ll need you to tell us the weight of each size of clothes you have.  We’ll also need you to weigh all of the clothes together. This is so we can tell our courier what weight the parcel is.

If you don’t have any scales, then take a look at our how to weigh your clothes page for another clever way of doing this.

What you need so you can package your clothes for collection

We’ll arrange a courier to collect your clothes.  To make sure your clothes are safe on their journey to us, you’ll need the following items.

A strong cardboard box or several strong, good quality black dustbin sacks

Please put your clothes in a strong cardboard box, if you have one.

If not, you’ll need to put all your clothes in two or three good quality black dustbin sacks – double bagged at least.  The thicker the wall of the dustbin sacks, the better.

Do not send your clothes in thin or single dustbin sacks.  If your bags rip in transit, you will not be paid for lost items.

      Strong packing or sticky tape

You will need strong tape to not only close seal the box or close the opening on your dustbin sack, but also wrap your parcel.

Once your clothes are in the box or sack, wrap the whole parcel in tape (round and round in different directions).  This will protect it against bumps and scrapes and means that even if the bag tears, your clothes shouldn’t fall out.

Please do not use normal sticky tape – this is not strong enough.

Optional - A printer to print the shipping label

We’ll arrange a courier to collect your clothing from you.  To do this, they will need a shipping label to be printed out and stuck to the parcel.

We will send you the label attached to an email.  You will need to print it out and stick it on.

If you don’t have access to a printer, don’t worry.  The courier can print the label when they arrive, all you will need to do is write the address on a piece of paper and stick it to your parcel.

      Donations

      We welcome donations

If you are looking to donate your clothes to us, then we would love to hear from you.  Our process for accepting donations is really easy and quick.

To get started, just fill out our Start Selling form and make sure you tick the box indicating you’re looking to donate your clothes.  We’ll be in touch as soon as possible to make arrangements.

When you donate your second hand clothes to us, you know they'll be going to good homes and children that need them

We'll still arrange a courier to collect your items, so it's quicker and easier than any other way of getting rid of your clothes

As long as the clothes you're donating are for children, the information we need from you is relatively small

We do ask that you check your clothes still meet our Quality Standards

You will still need to agree to our Terms & Conditions of Purchase. Clause 10 explains the differences for anyone making donations
